What is Garment Fabric Consumption?

Fabric consumption refers to the total weight or yardage of fabric required to manufacture a specific garment style or bulk order quantity.

Because fabric is usually bought by weight in kilograms (for knits) or by yards/meters (for wovens), converting pattern marker length into kilograms ensures accurate raw material procurement without over-ordering or short-shipping.

Fabric Consumption Formulas

The weight of fabric consumed per piece and total order booking weight are calculated using:

Fabric Area per Piece (m²) = (Usable Width_cm × Consumption Length per Piece_cm) / 10,000
Fabric Weight per Piece (g) = Fabric Area per Piece (m²) × GSM
Total Fabric Required (kg) = [ Fabric Weight per Piece (g) × Order Qty × (1 + Wastage% / 100) ] / 1,000
Usable Width (cm)Cuttable width of the fabric roll (excluding pinholes and selvage edges).
Consumption Length per Piece (cm)Running marker length required for ONE garment piece from your CAD marker plan.
GSM (g/m²)Fabric weight in grams per square meter.
Wastage / Process Loss (%)Cutting room waste, roll end loss, and printing/dyeing shrinkage allowance (typically 3%–8%).

How to Calculate Order Fabric Weight Step-by-Step

  1. Obtain the running marker length per garment piece from your CAD pattern master or mini-marker report.
  2. Measure the usable (cuttable) fabric roll width in centimeters.
  3. Confirm the targeted fabric GSM from the buyer tech pack.
  4. Enter the order quantity in pieces and your factory's process wastage allowance percentage.
  5. Optionally enter fabric price per kg to estimate total fabric material purchasing cost.

Worked Industry Example

A merchandiser needs to book single jersey knit fabric for a order of 10,000 t-shirts.

• Usable Width: 160 cm
• Marker Consumption Length: 90 cm per piece
• Fabric GSM: 180 g/m²
• Order Quantity: 10,000 pcs
• Wastage Allowance: 5%
Fabric Area per Piece = (160 × 90) / 10,000 = 1.44 m²
Fabric Weight per Piece = 1.44 m² × 180 g/m² = 259.2 g
Total Fabric (kg) = [ 259.2 g × 10,000 pcs × 1.05 ] / 1,000 = 2,721.6 kg
Final Result: 2,721.6 kg Total Fabric Requirement

Mandatory Industry Assumptions & Disclaimer

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • •Mixing measurement units (e.g. entering inches in a centimeter input field).
  • •Forgetting to account for process waste, shrinkage, or cutting loss allowances.
  • •Entering unverified target values instead of actual measured shop-floor parameters.
  • •Premature rounding of intermediate decimals before completing multi-step formulas.

When to Use in Operations

  • ✓During pre-production costing and fabric/trims booking.
  • ✓On the garment factory floor for daily IE balancing and target setting.
  • ✓In buying house meetings when auditing supplier quotes and BOM sheets.
  • ✓For quality assurance audits and shipping carton volume verification.

Frequently Asked Questions

This figure comes directly from your pattern maker or CAD marker report. It represents the total length of fabric roll required on the cutting table divided by the number of garment garments cut in that marker lay.
